Innovating Justice

CHALLENGE

Encourage and highlight creative, innovative approaches to existing justice challenges.

SOLUTION

Host a regional “boostcamp” to source disruptive justice innovations from across North Africa and bring together a broad range of stakeholders all working on justice-related issues.

RESULT

Tunisian startups pitched their justice innovations to an expert jury and a diverse audience of entrepreneurs and legal professionals. The startups and attendees also participated in a co-creation session to further discuss and refine their respective innovations.

Ooredoo Movie Challenge

CHALLENGE

Build a durable sense of community and teamwork amongst 100 senior department heads at a major telecommunications company.

SOLUTION

Give these department heads the time, tools, and expertise to make something creative together, and show it off to their colleagues, family, and friends.

RESULT

The Ooredoo Movie Challenge gave department heads a full day in a massive movie studio to write and shoot a 3-minute film. Real directors, film crews, and costume teams worked with participants to produce a high-quality movie, and most importantly, to have fun together!

Coworking Summit 2015

CHALLENGE

Connect the key leaders and innovators in the Mediterranean creative economy who are engaged in similar activities, but often operate in isolation from one another.

SOLUTION

Gather over 50 founders and managers of coworking spaces, fablabs, and cultural hubs from 14 countries across the Mediterranean region for the 2015 Coworking Summit at the Cogite Coworking Space in Tunis, Tunisia. This three-day summit assembled participants to share experiences, build a regional network, and acquire the skills to bring their operations to the next level.

RESULT

Participants engaged in professional workshops, innovative trainings, and community-building activities to further develop the skills needed to professionalize their operations. The summit also produced a strong community of leaders and innovators in the regional creative economy.

TEDxCarthage

CHALLENGE

Launch the first TEDx in Tunisia during a time of repression, in order to present alternatives to persistent narratives of success and strengthen the role of free speech.

SOLUTION

Feature inspiring doers from Tunisia and abroad through a major TEDx event, spark younger generations  of Tunisians to challenge themselves and think differently, and build a TEDx community in Tunisia.

RESULT

Today there are 50 TEDx events in Tunisia, with TEDxCarthage returning year after year with audiences of over 2000 people, making it one of the largest TEDx’s in the world. TEDxCarthage also works to mentor other TEDx teams and create a community of TEDxers spreading great ideas in Tunisia.

Raise Your Voice! (3alli Soutek!)

CHALLENGE

Integrate young people into civil activity and local-level decision making and empower them to advocate for solutions to problems affecting youth in Tunisia.

SOLUTION

3alli Soutek is a youth advocacy program that develops young people’s communication skills, educate youth on local decision making processes, and creates avenues for youth and local decision makers to meet and collaborate together

RESULT

Since 2015, 3alli Soutek has hosted workshops in over a dozen cities across Tunisia to work with motivated young people and to start a dialogue on youth issues. In each workshop, participants select two representatives from their region (one man and one woman) to participate in an annual, national dialogue conference alongside elected leaders, members of the media, and other key stakeholders.

QFF Achievers Awards

CHALLENGE

Create a durable community amongst the diverse Tunisian entrepreneurs supported by the QFF fund, and celebrate their achievements and excellence.

SOLUTION

The Achievers Awards—the largest gathering of entrepreneurs ever in Tunisia—brought together over 1000 young innovators, business leaders, and government ministers to recognize exceptional achievements in entrepreneurship. The ceremony also included innovative workshops, speaker sessions, and cultural activities to further inspire and support Tunisia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

RESULT

The ceremony gave ten major awards to innovative projects in industry, agriculture, environment, handcrafts, technology to great domestic and international media acclaim. The day-long event also gave Tunisian entrepreneurs from across the country the opportunity to meet and network with key business leaders and government officials.

The Disrupt Series

CHALLENGE

Develop the talents of creative entrepreneurs in Tunisia, give them the knowledge and skills to move from the idea to action stage in their projects, and develop a cohesive community of entrepreneurs within the Tunisian creative economies.

SOLUTION

Disrupt!/, a series of business idea competitions across the Arab world that bring together innovators within a specific sector of creative industries. A 3-day event, Disrupt!/ selects teams of young creatives to further develop their idea with the support of mentors and experts in their industry. At the end of the event, teams pitch their idea and business model in front of a jury for cash prizes.

RESULT

Design and implement the Disrupt!/ business idea competition in Tunis.

Wasabi hosted the inaugural Disrupt!/Media!/ competition in October 2014. This edition brought together 25 young entrepreneurs under the theme “Digital Storytelling,” and featured 6 expert mentors from the fields of art, journalism, business, and design.

A second edition, Disrupt!/Games!/ brought together 30 young game designers with disruptive ideas for solving real world problems through gamified experiences in May 2015. As they developed their ideas, participants worked with  Walid Sultan Midani of Digitialmania and Dutch game designer Dimme van der Hout of MonkeyBizniz.

In February 2016, Wasabi hosted a third edition, Disrupt!/Media!/, with  24 candidates from across the country worked on ideas in “audio-visual culture.” Candidates were coached by trainer Adel Beznine, eight mentors from the Tunisian creative industries, and Hans Luyckx, Director of Operations at IJsfontein, a Dutch company which creates playful digital learning platforms.

TEDx Workshop Series & Youth TEDx’s

CHALLENGE

Grow the TEDx community in Tunisia in a sustainable way and engage more young people in a conversation of ideas.

SOLUTION

Lead a series of 10 youth workshops for 50 young Tunisians that covered aspects of running a TEDx event, including hard skills like technical and financial expertise, and soft skills like team management and leadership techniques.

RESULT

5 new youth-led TEDx events, selected from a youth proposal competition conducted at the culmination of the workshop series, including: TEDxESPRIT: “Education Reform,” TEDxSadikiCollege: “Find Your Way,” TEDxIHECCarthage: “Dare,” TEDxENAU: “Pushing the Limits,” and TEDxLPM8: “Aspire to Inspire.”

Ooredoo Talents

CHALLENGE

Foster a common sense of cohesion and pride amongst the thousands of employees at a major telecommunications company.

SOLUTION

Provide a platform to showcase employees’ often hidden individual talents and allow them to get to know their colleagues in an entirely different light.

RESULT

Ooredoo Talent brought together 1700 Ooredoo employees to showcase their unique skills in a live talent contest for prizes. This event celebrated the individuality of Ooredoo’s employees and served to build a sense of family within the company.

“Breaking Barriers to Youth Inclusion” Report and Animations

CHALLENGE

Promote the major findings of a World Bank report entitled report “Breaking the Barriers to Youth Inclusion” on the economic and social situation of youth in Tunisia.

SOLUTION

A report launch event for the press and the public, infographic series, and online video animating the findings of this.

RESULT

Wasabi assembled members of the media and key members of civil society for the launch of the report, which included a question and answer session on critical challenges facing youth. Wasabi also produced a series of engaging infographics around the report, as well as a video in English, French, and Arabic animating the major findings.
