Afkar

CHALLENGE

Address key issues in Tunisia by gathering key stakeholders to develop implementable solutions within their spheres of influence.

SOLUTION

Host six editions of full-day dialogues to produce implementable solutions, which are then published in an Afkar White Paper. Between editions, Afkar works to raise the level of discourse and cultivate the next generation of decision-makers through public discussions, videos series, and fellowship programs.

RESULT

In February 2018, Wasabi brought together over 55 top stakeholders from the Tunisian government, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations, to discuss corruption in Tunisia and develop White Paper recommendations. To continue the conversation, Afkar has published engaging online videos and hosted public Afkar Talks.

“Breaking Barriers to Youth Inclusion” Report and Animations

CHALLENGE

Promote the major findings of a World Bank report entitled report “Breaking the Barriers to Youth Inclusion” on the economic and social situation of youth in Tunisia.

SOLUTION

A report launch event for the press and the public, infographic series, and online video animating the findings of this.

RESULT

Wasabi assembled members of the media and key members of civil society for the launch of the report, which included a question and answer session on critical challenges facing youth. Wasabi also produced a series of engaging infographics around the report, as well as a video in English, French, and Arabic animating the major findings.

First Arab Youth and Development Debate

CHALLENGE

Launch a dialogue among youth from around the Arab world on how the Arab Spring has impacted them in their countries and communities.

SOLUTION

Implement the first Arab Youth and Development Debate, led by World Bank and Center for Mediterranean Integration. Two teams of youth activists from Tunisia, Iraq, Egypt, and Yemen debated the notion “Have Youth Gained from the Arab Spring?”

RESULT

A professional studio quality debate in the historic Tunis medina that aired online and on AlJazeera Mubasher to audiences across the Middle East and North Africa.

UNDP Constitutional Information Tour

CHALLENGE

Educate the public on the new 2014 Tunisian Constitutions, and on their protected rights, duties, and obligations.

SOLUTION

Generate far reaching PR coverage in Tunisia media on the information tour led by the United Nations Development Programme and the Tunisian National Constituent Assembly in all 24 governorates.

RESULT

National media coverage of this historic campaign, and conversations with citizens across the country on their protected rights.

TEDx Workshop Series & Youth TEDx’s

CHALLENGE

Grow the TEDx community in Tunisia in a sustainable way and engage more young people in a conversation of ideas.

SOLUTION

Lead a series of 10 youth workshops for 50 young Tunisians that covered aspects of running a TEDx event, including hard skills like technical and financial expertise, and soft skills like team management and leadership techniques.

RESULT

5 new youth-led TEDx events, selected from a youth proposal competition conducted at the culmination of the workshop series, including: TEDxESPRIT: “Education Reform,” TEDxSadikiCollege: “Find Your Way,” TEDxIHECCarthage: “Dare,” TEDxENAU: “Pushing the Limits,” and TEDxLPM8: “Aspire to Inspire.”

TEDxCarthage

CHALLENGE

Launch the first TEDx in Tunisia during a time of repression, in order to present alternatives to persistent narratives of success and strengthen the role of free speech.

SOLUTION

Feature inspiring doers from Tunisia and abroad through a major TEDx event, spark younger generations  of Tunisians to challenge themselves and think differently, and build a TEDx community in Tunisia.

RESULT

Today there are 50 TEDx events in Tunisia, with TEDxCarthage returning year after year with audiences of over 2000 people, making it one of the largest TEDx’s in the world. TEDxCarthage also works to mentor other TEDx teams and create a community of TEDxers spreading great ideas in Tunisia.

Munathara Initiative

CHALLENGE

Develop a high quality debate platform for youth in the Arab world that can engage young people in political economic and cultural debates, and bring established thought leaders to debate with them on a single stage.

SOLUTION

Professional studio production of live youth debates, including lighting, video, and sound as well as event facilitation.

RESULT

Three youth debates in Tunisia and Turkey exploring the topics of Separation of Religion and State, the Need for Intervention in Syria, and Solutions to the Economic Crisis in Tunisia
